The receptacle is usually marked “Travel Trailer Use Only”. The receptacle is wired with three wires from the breaker panel and requires a single, dedicated 30 amp breaker. The three wires are one V black , a ground usually bare or green and a neutral white. The terminals on the back of the receptacle will be marked with G and perhaps a green screw , W and perhaps a silver screw and maybe B and perhaps a brass screw but in many cases, the last terminal is not marked.
The neutral goes to the side marked ‘W’ for white and the black hot wire goes to the remaining screw as shown. Before using the outlet, make sure you check the polarity with a tester. It is worthwhile noting that many modern electrical devices switches, duplex outlets, receptacles, etc. Some people believe that the 50 amp RV receptacle is a “special” part.
This is absolutely not true.

We have often talked about putting in a 30 amp breaker and RV style outlet for the camper at the house. Add to that any other electrical devices in your camper and you quickly see why a 30 amp electric supply is needed. Most standard household plugs only supply 15 amps, so using a common adaptor to allow the 30 amp RV plug to be inserted into a standard household 15 amp outlet may be quickly overloaded. While this adaptor may be safe to use in limited situations when you closely monitor what devices are being powered, I think the installation of a 30 amp RV style outlet.
It was only when our Air Conditioning went out at the house that we “needed” the camper to use as an “air conditioned lifeboat”!! Install a 20 amp plug close to where you park the camper, and get a real 20 amp extension cord the shorter the better. Install a 30 amp RV plug plug close to where you park the camper, and into this you can plug the 30 amp RV cord. We chose to do 2. After a trip to Home Depot for the new breaker, box, cover plate and wire and a trip to a local RV dealer the 30a plug, neither Home Depot or a local electrical supply house carried them I had all the parts.
If you are not comfortable working with electric, hire someone to do this!!!!!!! Open the breaker panel and install 30 amp breaker. This will be wired to the 30a, v RV style plug. It was easy for me as the panel is in the garage, right by the overhead door. The new 30a plug could be installed right below the breaker panel.
How Do I Wire an RV Electrical Service?
I have an RV, which needs 50 amp service for full power. I also have kids with driveways, but no RV power setups. When I visit them, I’d like to be able to plug in with full power. My ex-wife also has an RV, which only needs 30 amp service. We’re friends now, but we’ll never both visit at the same time.

Please be guided accordingly. How can I keep my House Batteries Charged? It is especially important for those who do a lot of dry camping or boon docking. Selecting the number and type of battery and then keeping charged is a real challenge. I will not discuss the physics of chargers or the chemistry of batteries, rather the basics in non-technical language. More educated readers will have to understand the reason for my simplifications.
I have tried to distill a complex subject into practical layman’s terms and descriptions. House Battery or Batteries, typically called deep-cycle, store 12 vdc volt direct current electrical energy in a deep cycle and are designed to allow hundreds of cycles of discharging and recharging without damaging the battery. In contrast, an engine starting battery is designed to give a very short burst of high energy to start the engine and then to be immediately recharged.

Testimonials I was surfing on the internet recently reading some of the forums on RV AC Electricity and was astounded by the confusion over AC electricity, particularly amp usage of AC electricity. This goes to show you how unless you’re working with it every day, we take electricity for granted. After all , if I’m not having any problems what need is there for me to understand it?
By reading the forums the answer appears to be as soon as you purchase your first rv , start tripping a few breakers, and all of a sudden we’re wondering what in the world is going on. With rv’s getting bigger, fancier, and adding all the comforts of home and more power requirements have naturally increased resulting in the mysterious world of 50 amp service. If you think I’m exagerating just read some of the forums.
