Archaeology Venezuelan rock art mapped in unprecedented detail Rock engravings located in Western Venezuela — including some of the largest recorded anywhere in the world — have been mapped in unprecedented detail by UCL researchers. Top-down aerial perspective of east panel on Picure, with interpretative overlay of main engravings. North is at the bottom of the image.
The engravings petroglyphs , some of which are thought to be up to 2, years old, include depictions of animals, humans and cultural rituals. Another engraving of a horned snake measures more than 30 metres in length. All the rock art surveyed is located in the Atures Rapids Raudales de Atures area of Amazonas state in Venezuela, historically reported as the home of the native Adoles by Jesuit priests. Eight groups of engraved rock art were recorded on five islands within the Rapids.
Drone technology was used to photograph the engravings, some of which are in highly inaccessible areas. Historically low water levels in the Orinoco River at the time the research was carried out also meant more of the engravings were exposed. The motifs documented here display similarities to several other rock art sites in the locality, as well as in Brazil, Colombia, and much further afield. This is one of the first in-depth studies to show the extent and depth of cultural connections to other areas of northern South America in pre-Columbian and Colonial times.

Named the face of peace and the number one arts festival in the US by USA Today, this is the biggest global gathering of its kind. This year, 25, people from all over the world came, including 2, volunteers, thousands of travelers, shoppers, collectors and, most importantly, folk artists from 53 countries. The market starts with a parade of the artists welcomed by the city of Santa Fe as they gather in the main plaza welcomed by a Cuban live band.
Li Edelkoort, the honorary chair for and Keith Recker, the creative director, read the names of each country and cried when Syria was called. Face to face with artists from over 50 countries, there to explain what they do, to invite you to know something about their lives and traditions — my faith in what we can accomplish as a species is restored. Kavita Parmar from IOU Project was a first time participant in Innovation Inspiration, a special exhibition area featuring works by 30 artists who are reinterpreting time-honored materials and techniques into innovative works that express new meaning in the modern age.
The client response I have had even after coming back from the show has reinforced my belief that the customer is looking for authenticity and a direct dialogue with the craftsperson and this is one of the answers to the future of a true luxury shopping experience. Carla Fernandez, from Mexico and also a first time participant, said that she was very surprised to encounter a spiritual experience sort of a boot camp of the positive, the possible and the future where sharing is the currency.
She has been to many shows around the world just selling her products but this is the only time where she has felt a real support, a real sense of community.

I have some friends on the other side. But there are also fewer date prospects, they say, and more free time to date. But as graduation is rapidly approaching for the class of and every quarter seems faster than the preceding 10 weeks, I decided it was time to consult my peers. And even scarier, will it be hard enough to find platonic partners, let alone romantic ones, in a professional environment?

September 24, , University College London Credit: Marc Jones The fossilised remains of a reptile closely related to lizards are the oldest yet to be discovered. Two new fossil jaws discovered in Vellberg, Germany provide the first direct evidence that the ancestors of lizards, snakes and tuatara known collectively as lepidosaurs , were alive during the Middle Triassic period — around million years ago.
The new fossil finds predate all other lepidosaur records by 12 million years. The international team of scientists who dated the fossil jaws have provided evidence that lepidosaurs first appeared after the end-Permian mass extinction event , a period when fauna began to recover and thrive in the more humid climate.

September 21, , University College London Credit: CC0 Public Domain A new outbreak of a rare but preventable eye infection that can cause blindness, has been identified in contact lens wearers in a new study led by UCL and Moorfields Eye Hospital researchers. The research team found a threefold increase in Acanthamoeba keratitis since in South-East England. Reusable contact lens wearers with the eye infection are more likely to have used an ineffective contact lens solution, have contaminated their lenses with water or reported poor contact lens hygiene, according to the findings published today in the British Journal of Ophthalmology.
Acanthamoeba keratitis is an eye disease that causes the front surface of the eye, the cornea, to become painful and inflamed, due to infection by Acanthamoeba, a cyst-forming microorganism. Anyone can be infected, but contact lens users face the highest risk, due to a combination of increased susceptibility to infection, for reasons not fully established, as a result of contact lens wear and contamination of lens cases.

Despite over a century of intense study, we still know very little about the people buried at Stonehenge or how they came to be there. Part of the reason for this neglect is that many of the human remains were cremated, and so it was difficult to extract much useful information from them. Snoeck demonstrated that that cremated bone faithfully retains its strontium isotope composition, opening the way to use this technique to investigate where these people had lived during the last decade or so of their lives.
With permission from Historic England and English Heritage, the team analysed skull bones from 25 individuals to better understand the lives of those buried at the iconic monument. Although strontium isotope ratios alone cannot distinguish between places with similar values, this connection suggests west Wales as the most likely origin of at least some of these people.
While the Welsh connection was known for the stones, the study shows that people were also moving between west Wales and Wessex in the Late Neolithic, and that some of their remains were buried at Stonehenge. The results emphasise the importance of inter-regional connections involving the movement of both materials and people in the construction and use of Stonehenge, providing rare insight into the large scale of contacts and exchanges in the Neolithic, as early as years ago.
